FAQs
I'm totally out of shape! Won't it be impossible to participate in classes?
The pace of our classes are set by the individual taking the class. So it's very easy for anyone of any fitness level to come in and participate.
I'm not very co-ordinated. Can I still do Boxing, Muay Thai Kickboxing, or Jiu-Jitsu?
Almost everyone that starts feels that they are uncoordinated. The trainers at City Boxing will teach you the basics, and then progress you into the more advanced skills at your own pace.
Am I too old to start Boxing, Muay Thai Kickboxing, or Jiu-Jitsu?
The only real restrictions are the ones you place on yourself or the ones due to medical conditions. At City Boxing we have many members in their 60's that come and train on a regular basis.
No matter what your age, listen to your body and take one day at a time. If you start slowly then you will gradually benefit from all that the sport can offer. Not to mention... be in the best shape of your life.
The only way to truly know is to take the plunge and try it out. That's why we offer a $25 day pass, so that you can give City Boxing a test drive before you sign-up for one of our memberhip plans.
Do I have to fight to participate in one of your classes?
Absolutely not! In fact, you'll find that 95% of City Boxing members don't ever plan on fighting. They are simply taking advantage of the fitness benefits that our classes offer. Our class schedule clearly defines which classes are for sparring (fighting) and which ones are not.
Since 95% of the members do not want to fight.. the bulk of our class schedule is for non-fighters.
Our coaching staff arranges other non-scheduled training times and sessions for fighters.
What should I wear to class?
All you really need is a comfortable t-shirt and some sweat pants to begin. You can also wear shorts, but keep in mind that you'll be doing kicking so don't wear shorts that are too short. Short shorts will restrict your kicking ability and probably reveal things that you don't want revealed.
Eventually you can invest in kickboxing or training pants that are light weight and non-restrictive.
Last point... bring a water bottle. Always bring water!
What equipment do I need when I start?
Generally speaking you don't need any equipment when you first start. City Boxing can provide beginner or community gloves on hand for you to try the sport out first. If gloves aren't provided, and you're expected to buy them right off the bat... walk out and go somewhere else. You've just entered a school that is only interested in your wallet and how much it carries.
If you try our classes, and you love it.. then its time to make the investment. Our trainers can advise you on picking out and purchasing training gear.
How long does it take before I can spar or fight?
At City Boxing we never let people just come in off the street and spar or fight. This might be acceptable in other gym, but it violates our safety standards.
Depending on your level of experience it can take as long as 3 to 6 months before you're ready to spar. Ultimately, it will be at the discretion of our trainers to determine whether or not you are ready to spar.
That being said...if you come to City Boxing with a lot of previous experience, and can demonstrate to the satisfaction of our trainers that you can spar with control, then you'll be able to start sparring within days to weeks of being a member.
As far as competition goes, that decision is reserved for our coaching staff.
